Wow, love the new update to the menus! However, I noticed a few grammar problems, one specifically in the Intel section of the logbook, on the planet SR388, there is a missing word in the sentence "The nearby asteroid belt in the only recently been discovered by the[...]" Anyway, just a missing word there. It's nothing big, just thought I'd mention it. Anways, awesome mod, hope you keep going! :)

I just played about 20% of the game and it's awesome so far. I love the extra stuff that was added. The only thing is that I can't get the conntroller to work, it detects that it's plugged in and it let's me map the buttons but then it won't work.

Merry Christmas to you and to all Metroid fandom! :D

Great remake, i like the new additions alot! The game fells like Nintendo made it, you´ve done a great job. One little thing that i like more in V1. was that the regular powerbeam shot faster than for example the ice beam, because when you turn the ice beam off you had a advantage with the fire rate.

Felizes Fiestas.

GRACIAS.

BUENA SUERTE...

Everything feels and looks great so far. No gameplay problems on my end so far. About the only feedback I can give right now are the enemy death animations. The flame reminds me of old fan flash games back in the early 2000s. Hopefully it is just place holder for future death animations. I would like to see enemies exploding into different body parts, or something more metroid-esque. Great demo so far though, definitely feels like a Metroid game!

This... Is... Awesome... I know once this is a full throttle game I'll be donating (or buying if Nintendo decides to make it official ;)). Keep up the good work!

Just some food for thought: if there is some way to put it on mobile phones, I would love it. I'd also tell all my friends to buy it. Just keep this idea on the burner.

This game is GREAT! Though I have a few complaints/bugs:

- On one of my computers (win7-x64), you just fall off the screen on the first room after going through the door. The minimap shows you falling forever. On another computer (win7-x86) it works just fine.

- Sometimes the window size just resets when changing rooms, namely menus.

- I accidentally started a new game instead of continuing my old one. When you start a new game, there should be a "Are you sure you want to overwrite your old save file?" warning.

Other than this, everything is fantastic. Great job, Doc!

what's wrong with the demo i can't see the next area and when i go into it all i can see is the area right before i go into the next area. anyone else have this problem and does anyone know how to fix it?

ZapDash said...

I have been following this for years, but have never posted. This is so great, just like the GBA versions! I can't wait to face the later Metroids. The only problem I could find was in the first vine and metroid areas, the spiderball would not go up the walls in the corners by the eggs, same with one area in the over-world by the space ship. It was on the left wall a bit more than halfway up. but your engine is great, the metroids are tough, but have a good ai pattern.

Anonymous said...

An error comes out about gmZip.dill and it cannot play at all.
I ask you for the improvement.

Anonymous said...

Your game is great, but it's a bit easy, the blows of enemies little hurt.

Bart Laan said...

Am I doing something wrong? When I go right from the beginning Samus is falling indefinitely, while the camera is stuck right before she starts to fall.

Anonymous said...

This is excellent. Really great work. For some reason, though, it spikes my CPU usage to (or near) 100% and the sound turns into a distorted mess. Performance is pretty good overal, but there are pretty frequent bouts of slowdown. My computer should have no trouble at all running this.

The Ikari One said...

This game looks amazing, and the controls are smooth as silk! My only complaint might be that a few of the enemies are a little on the large side (The big red ones that fly left and right). Considering the original Metroid 2 had a lot of problems with not being able to hit anything, I'm not complaining, but it seems odd to have a regular enemy the size of an alpha metroid.

Nitpicks aside, I can't think of any other critique. You have crafted a fine game here, and I will be downloading Confrontation and looking forward to the completed AM2R.

cartemj823 said...

i have two thoughts on the AM2R demo
for one thing i just finished the demo and loved the music and the design.
the improvements i would make... maybe tone the difficulty down just a little bit the metroid's rubber band ai is a little too good but other than that keep up the good work its great

Anonymous said...

Great remake. Wish this was around on the snes or n64 back in the 90s. But still it should appear on nintendo consoles and or pc. Yes i would buy this. When might this game be finished? and how far does this demo go because i'm on level 3, the water world with gamma metroids.

Messianic said...

Just played through the whole demo and HOT DAMN! does this feel legit.

I have a couple of suggestions:

1) Make the normal enemies more fierce. I understand Metroid games always have flunky enemies, but at no time outside of the 2 boss fights did i ever feel like I could even come CLOSE to dying, and that is not a good thing. I'd say make the enemies do 1.5x to 2x more damage to you than they currently do (outside of the bosses). Also I felt like the 2nd boss was the PERFECT difficulty and should be the measure of all boss fights; the first boss was too easy imo and needs to deal more damage with its attacks.

2) Do you currently have all your boss ideas worked out? I have an idea or two that I think would work well if you would like me to throw it your way. Otherwise EXCELLENT WORK!

I played through the whole demo without a hitch the first time. There were no issues with the menus or control options until I beat the demo. It was brilliant by the way.

I tried to play the game again after I had beaten it. Because I had just gotten my usb controller in the mail I wanted to adjust the controls to fit my preferences. I noticed that the menus were acting strange because the up input would not respond. As soon as I went to the options menu, it began to uncontrollably scroll up and up. It was impossible to fix this problem as far as I'm concerned.

Again, this only happened after I beat the demo. I tried redownloading it, and it is still happening. The only reason I am reporting this is because I enjoyed the demo so much. Just letting you know. Hopefully you can pinpoint and fix this issue.

I will admit it could possible be related to my computer, but if there is anyway you can fix this I would love it. Great job though. This demo keeps to the atmosphere and level design of the original gameboy classic while adding fresh ideas to the boss battles.

THE GOOD: The game feels great. when I get hit by an enemy, it feels like its my fault. I like how challenging it is and as a result, defeating bosses, and strong enemies FEELS GOOD! the game looks and sounds great. having a lot of attention to detail. for example, freezing then shooting the same enemy with a missile will make them shatter everywhere, and that feels awesome to do. the same can be said about the jumping robots, you get a sense of destruction as they fall apart when taking damage. the controls are nice and you leave a lot of things up to the player to figure out, (THIS IS A GOOD THING)and the result is the player feeling better about themselves for doing it!

THE BAD: not much can be said. but there are some things to be improved on... although I do like being able to freeze enemies, and then blow them to pieces, I felt myself not wanting to take the time to do it, and here's why. Some enemies take so many shots to finally freeze (like the purple flying ones that zip around) that by the time I froze them it only took a couple more shots before they were dead. so why even use a missile?... and the enemies that were weak enough to be frozen in one shot, died in one hit from a missile anyway. Speaking of missiles... the power ratio between the missiles and charge beam felt way off balance. Missiles are way stronger than the charge beam, and you can get them ALL back so fast at a recharge station. why not just use my missiles all the time? the charge beam hardly felt like it did anything, given the time it took to charge it.

The music was very well blended, and it transitions beautifully :) everything sounds great, but I was a little bit taken out of it when certain tunes would play... the violins that play when Samus gets an Item or respawns sounds beautiful, but it didn't fit with the game feel and took you out of the experience a little. Yes it is close to how the music should sound when she gets an item, but I felt like it is missing something.
The last negative thing I can possibly think of, is the sound effect that happens when you push continue. it sounds like a drum symbol. It sounded very blunt and "in your face" so to speak. It just didn't sound like it should be in a Metroid game, and as a result it felt very out of place.

OVER ALL: FUCKING AWESOME, CANT WAIT UNTIL ITS DONE!!! this game feels so good to play. I hope we meet someday so I can shake your hand!

William Rodriguez said...

Just an idea, maybe this game should have a multiplayer mode, of course the game is fantastic as is, but maybe, when you finish the entire game and release it, maybe you can add a splitscreen multiplayer mode to the game. it may also be nice to have a bossrush mode. Just to clarify, I love this game as is anyway, and do not care if my suggested features make it into the game, your doing a great job and this game is super playable as is, it just might be nice to have a multiplayer mode for replayability and a bossrush mode to view your magnificent bosses, (which are very challenging and fun,) without replaying the entire game over or using up a save file. and again, your progress on this game is incredible regardless. I feel comfortable with calling this game a solid remake.

I just found out a Metroid 2 remake exists..

THIS MADE MY DAY!!!

Anonymous said...

I realize it's a work in progress, but here's my thoughts on the game based on the demo (which was awesome btw!):

In order to run from a crouch, you have to hold down the button. I think either the time for the run to start should be significantly reduced or removed completely, as waiting to run to crouching slows down the gameplay.

You instantly lose momentum upon morphing in midair. I don't if you're planning on fixing this, but if you weren't you should. Like above, it hinders the gameplay by slowing down your movement across the environment.

You can't jump up from the spiderball, you have to toggle it off first. Again, slows down gameplay.

There's no sprinting. Without the ability to sprint, you're lowering the skill ceiling by forcing the player to move at the default speed, which feels sluggish at the moment. Let us sprint so we can flawlessly fly through areas at high speeds like a pro.

Also, wall jumping. It seems like the window to execute a wall jump is too small, but maybe I'm just a scrub.

Lava and thorns, at least on normal, are waaaay too weak. I can stand in both for 10 full seconds from 100 energy and not die. Please increase the damage intake.

Bomb jumping seems too easy. All I have to do is spam the button and I'm in the ceiling, instead of timing my bombs to execute an advanced ability. I realize you're going for very fast gameplay, but maybe limit the amount of bombs on screen to three, for the sake of raising the skill ceiling.

The rest of my criticism might be wrong, since I never played the original game, but here it is anyway:

It seems way too linear. The areas aren't very complex, and to move forward requires little backtracking. Maybe the game is meant to be like this, and after playing it in it's entirety I'd appreciate it, but at the moment I see it as an issue.

In a single area there's three metroids to fight, all of which require no searching. Maybe this is only because the game is unfinished, or maybe the game is supposed to be made like this, but with so little exploration it doesn't feel too metroid-like.

In fact, the whole game so far feels like this. There's exploration, but it's sparse. Overall it feels linear with only a 'hint' of exploration tossed in, if that makes sense.

There's a room with literally four missile tanks. That's a bit excessive, no matter how the game was meant to be made. Additionally, a lot of missile tanks are waaaay too easy to find. The hidden items need to be more hidden. Or maybe I'm missing all of them, but still, too many items out in the open.

A lot of power-ups are found too early and with too little effort. Again, maybe the game is supposed to be like this, but right now it makes the game feel like a watered-down experience compared to other metroid games.

Save points refill energy and items. This drastically reduces the survival aspect of the game. You're supposed to get your resources from killing enemies, not be rescued by the savepoints. This removes a great deal of tension from the game, hindering the experience, and making it more casual.

But other than all of that, great work! Love the sounds, visuals, art, and music.

This is the most awesome project I have ever followed, and I wish you much luck in bringing this project to us, taking AS MUCH time as you need! I'm sure it will be a legendary work of art.

Joey Lenhart said...

I found something you might fix, when you spin jump in the air as you enter a new section of the area, the spin effect noise carries over. Try to make it to when you enter the next section of an area that the music effect ends until you spin again rather than carrying over. Thank you for listening (if you read this comment) and I would love to see this fixed.

I don't know your name or how to address you, but I just can't express how much I and other's can't wait for this to be finished! Arachnus is a tough boss, but once I figured out what to do he became much easier, so I don't hope you took too much challenge out of the fight. This whole project of your's seems amazing! I have one problem: the Brinstar Remix...I do like it, but when it has the little hand drum noise playing the first time to initiate the beginning of the music, I was expecting the music to stop being background sounding and become a little louder and have a few more musical tones added. I might be being a little to vague-I hope I'm not.

João Baptista said...

Hello!
Are you using Game Maker (as I've seen in one of your posts)? If so, which version are you using?

Anonymous said...

This is actually pretty awesome. The controls are very smooth and fluid, just as the gameplay is.

There are a few things that concern me though:
First, don't get me wrong. The graphics are amazing. It looks just like a GBA metroid game, which is awesome. However, some of the tiles and such that I assume are custom drawn because I haven't seen them in a metroid game before, seem to use a different artistic style. Like in the chozo temple. Some of the wall blocks are far more detailed or less detailed than others, and it makes them seem out of place.

Second being the control scheme on the menu. Yeah, I know. You have as few key bindings as possible. But using fire/aim to place a marker ends up getting in the way for me. I always keep trying to use one of the two to go to the next subscreen, and instead deleting or placing a marker where I had no intention of putting it.

Other than that, yeah. Smooth as silk, and even a bit faster than nintendo's metroid sidescrollers. I'm really glad I came across this. The music is mesmerising (and for those of you who are wondering, the individual tracks are .ogg files, found in the game's primary directory)

Keep it up! I want this when the full version is released!

Very, very awesome work. Gave me a solid hour of gameplay to mess around with getting everything. I cannot wait for this game to be finished. Arachnus beat my ass! I love how difficult he is, and all bosses should be that hard to keep this game at maximum interest. Can't wait to see the Metroid Queen battle lol.

I know people want this game to be finished, but rushing things will only make the game worse from the point of where it ends in the current demo. Keep being innovative with your surprises, and boss techniques.

I know redesigning would take even more time, but it would be awesome to add in missile expansions or Energy Tanks that are just out of our reach with the current upgrade-loadout, which will force us to back track if want those upgrades :)

Game lagged a bit when the spiderball was used. Aside from that, everything was perfect. A little too perfect... But hey! That raises my hopes for this game even more! More than it already was, I mean. Also, if I turn on the Ice Beam, I can't fire as rapidly as I could if it was turned off. Not sure if this is intentional (seeing as Metroid Prime also had a slow Ice Beam) but Metroid Zero mission (as well as this demo with the Ice Beam turned off) fires fast. Anyway. Amazing game! Keep up the great work! :D

I realize I'm late to the party a bit but I just played this demo (it's amazingly well done, thanks so much for making this great remake) and I was exploring the map hoping to unlock the extras menu option when I noticed this area

Is that area just sealed off for the demo? It's up and to the left of Samu's ship location.

Good job with the update! It's fucking brilliant. But I have to say that that new Torizo boss is an extremely rough beast to battle, even on easy or normal modes! Maybe a battle too long at that stage of the game, I think. The rest of the demo is more or less easy to handle, so you don't expext it... Like Arachnus, I suppose, but Arachnus is far easier!
Well, in any case is brilliant and it will be a masterpiece when ended. Good work and saludos desde España! ;)

TendaShy, that area is the way from where Samus returns to the ship at the end of the original game :) It's the exit from the Queen Metroid's nest. Hope I have answered your question!

Torozo on hard mode is rediculously difficult, but i beat him after 11 tries.

I went through the new demo today. Amazing again, lots of cool new stuff. I feel like I've done everything but my % is 98, nothing on the map to indicate I missed an area. Must be something hidden really well! Shinesparking is just like it I hoped it would be, very well done. I noticed you can diagonal morph ball shinespark, which seems new as I don't think that was possible in any official Metroid.

Out of curiosity, is a mac release in the works? I know a linux one is, and worst comes to worst I'll run it through wine, but it would be nice to have a native mac release as well :)
